Recommended Packing List: Tambopata Jungle Tour (3D/2N)

The Tambopata National Reserve is one of the most accessible yet incredibly biodiverse regions of the Peruvian Amazon. During this journey, you will transition from the high Andes in Cusco (3,400 m) to the tropical lowlands near Puerto Maldonado (180 m).

Unlike mountain destinations, the Amazon rainforest presents different challenges: intense humidity (often above 80%), strong sun exposure on river journeys, sudden tropical rain showers, muddy trails, and active insect life.

Being properly prepared will allow you to fully enjoy wildlife observation, canoe navigation on Lake Sandoval, and guided jungle walks without discomfort.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?

Documents & Travel Essentials (Most Important)

  • Original Passport: Mandatory for domestic flights and registration procedures. You will not be able to board your flight without it.
  • Cash in Small Denominations (Peruvian Soles): There are no ATMs in the jungle. Cash is useful for beverages, or small personal purchases.
  • Travel Insurance Information: Keep a physical or digital copy accessible at all times.
  • Digital & Printed Copies of Documents: Passport and insurance copies stored both on your phone and in printed format.
  • Flight Confirmation & Tour Voucher: Easily accessible on your phone.

Specialized Clothing (Humid Tropical Climate)

The key is lightweight, breathable, and quick-dry clothing.

  • Lightweight Long-Sleeved Shirts: Essential to protect from mosquitoes and sun exposure during boat rides.
  • Quick-Dry Trekking Pants (2 pairs): Avoid jeans ? they absorb moisture, become heavy, and never fully dry in jungle humidity.
  • Short-Sleeved T-Shirts (1?2): For relaxing at the lodge.
  • Light Rain Jacket or Poncho: Tropical rain can occur at any time of year.
  • Light Fleece or Jacket: Necessary for early departures and your return flight to Cusco.
  • Swimwear: Optional for lodge facilities or river areas (if conditions allow).
  • Undergarments & Trekking Socks: Moisture-wicking materials recommended.
  • Color Recommendation: Neutral tones such as beige, khaki, olive, or light gray. Avoid very dark colors like black or navy, which attract heat and certain insects.

Footwear

  • Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes: Comfortable, already broken-in, with good grip for muddy or wet trails.
  • Sandals or Light Shoes: For relaxing at the lodge after excursions.

Jungle Gear & Accessories

  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Essential for the night jungle walk and navigating lodge pathways after dark.
  • Small Daypack (20?30L): For daily excursions to Lake Sandoval and jungle hikes.
  • Rain Cover or Waterproof Backpack: Strongly recommended.
  • Dry Bags: To protect electronics and documents from humidity and water splashes during river travel.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated in the tropical heat.
  • Camera & Spare Batteries: Humidity drains batteries faster than usual.
  • Polarized Sunglasses & Wide-Brim Hat: Important for sun protection during boat rides.

Health & Personal Care

  • Insect Repellent: Must contain 30%?50% DEET. This is the single most important item for jungle comfort.
  • High-SPF Sunscreen (50+): Waterproof and sweat-resistant.
  • Personal Toiletries: Biodegradable products are recommended.
  • Wet Wipes & Hand Sanitizer: Very useful in humid conditions.
  • Personal First-Aid Kit: Include antihistamines (important in case of insect reactions), blister care, and any personal medication.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination: Strongly recommended for visits to lowland Amazon regions.
