To walk the original Inca path, choose the Classic Inca Trail (4 days, 42 km, highest point 4,215 m), or with less time the Short Inca Trail (2 days) or the 1-day Inca Trail (10 km). The Salkantay Trek (5 days, 74 km, pass at 4,630 m) and the Inca Jungle Trek (4 days, with mountain biking and rafting) do not need an Inca Trail permit. The Lares Trek (4 days) crosses the Lares Valley, and the Choquequirao trek (7 days, 97 km) visits the Inca citadel of Choquequirao before Machu Picchu.
Only the Inca Trail tours: the Classic 4-day, 5-day, Short 2-day, 1-day and private Inca Trail, and the 7-day Salkantay and Inca Trail trek. Permits are issued in your name for a specific date, and the daily limit of 500 people includes guides, cooks and porters. The Salkantay, Inca Jungle, Lares and Choquequirao treks do not need one.
April to October is the drier and busiest season, so Inca Trail permits for those months sell out first. November to March is the rainy season, and the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance.
