Salkantay Map & Schedule
DAY 01
The starting point of the hike is Sayllapata at 3100m / 10,168ft. You will then reach Sorapampa where a base camp will be set up for you at 3,800m / 12467ft .The path spurs off from camp to Humanatay Lagoon located at 4,200 meters above sea level. This shall be your afternoon excursion.The days walking will cover 11km and take approx 5 hours depending on fitness level and walking pace.
DAY 02:
The route continues onto the Salkantay mountain pass which lies at 4,600 meters above sea level and is the highest point of the trek. The route traverses the edge of Salkantay mountain (6,271m / 15,090ft) and descends down to Huaracmachay where the environment starts to change. Another decent to Collpapampa at 2,870m / 9,416ft will conclude the day.This day will take approx 21km taking approx 9 hours.
DAY 03:
Leaving Collpapampa you will accend slightly before making a reaxed decent for the rest of the day into the Peurvian Amazon jungle. The route closely follows the river for most of the day until reaching Lucmabamba at 2,140m / 7,021ft The days walking takes approx 17km over 6 hours.
DAY 04:
This day starts with a steep ascent to a view point and onwards to the recently rediscovered Llactapata at 2,850m / 9,350ft. The route then drops to the river and once in the valley connects to the hydroelectric plant and follows the train track into Aguas Calientes which is located at 2,040m / 6,692ft. This day consists of 20km and takes approx 7 hours.
DAY 05:
The last day entails traveling by either bus of foot up to Machu Picchu for the exploration of the ruins. Then you will return the same way back down to Aguas Calientes to catch your train back to Ollantaytambo.
