Inca Trail Inclusions and Exclusions: What’s Included in Your Trek?
Planning your Inca Trail adventure and wondering exactly what is included in your tour package? Understanding the inclusions and exclusions before booking helps you prepare properly and avoid unexpected costs during your trek to Machu Picchu.
While services can vary depending on the trek length and itinerary, this guide outlines the standard inclusions, exclusions, and optional extras that are typically provided on our Inca Trail tours.

Inca Trail Inclusions
Our Inca Trail packages are designed to provide everything you need for a comfortable and memorable trekking experience. From permits and transportation to meals and camping equipment, most essential services are included.
Inca Trail Permits and Entrance Tickets
All required permits for the Inca Trail are included in your package. This covers your official Inca Trail permit as well as your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu for the designated visiting circuit and entry time.
Since permits are limited and often sell out months in advance, securing your permit is one of the most important parts of the booking process.

Professional Inca Trail Guides
All treks are led by experienced, licensed local guides who accompany you throughout the journey. In addition to sharing information about Inca history, culture, archaeology, and local traditions, your guide also provides support throughout the trek and is trained in first aid procedures.
Camping Equipment
We provide most of the equipment required for the trek, allowing you to travel light while enjoying a comfortable camping experience.
Included equipment typically consists of:
- Sleeping tents
- Dining tents
- Tables and chairs
- Sleeping mats
- Duffel bags
- Dining utensils
- First aid equipment
- Emergency oxygen equipment
Specific equipment may vary depending on the tour package selected.

Meals and Drinks on the Inca Trail
Freshly prepared meals are provided throughout the trek by our professional trekking chefs.
Most packages include:
- Breakfasts
- Lunches
- Dinners
- Snacks
- Afternoon tea or happy hour
Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements can usually be accommodated with advance notice.
Please note that meal arrangements may differ on shorter Inca Trail options such as the 2-Day Inca Trail.

Transportation
All transportation related to the trek is included.
This generally includes:
- Hotel pick-up in Cusco
- Private transportation to KM 82
- Bus ticket from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes
- Expedition train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo
- Transfer back to Cusco
Transportation services may vary slightly depending on the itinerary selected.
Porters
Porters play an essential role on the Classic Inca Trail. They transport camping equipment, food supplies, and shared gear ahead of the group each day.
Depending on your package, a porter may also carry a portion of your personal belongings, allowing you to hike with only a daypack.

Accommodation in Aguas Calientes
Some itineraries, particularly 5-day Inca Trail programs, include hotel accommodation in Aguas Calientes.
When included, accommodation is generally provided in a comfortable 3-star hotel with private rooms and private bathroom facilities.
Inca Trail Exclusions
Although most essential services are included, there are a few items that trekkers should plan and budget for separately.
Breakfast on Day 1
Breakfast before the trek begins is generally not included. Most travelers eat at their hotel or purchase food before departing Cusco.
Lunch on the Final Day
Lunch after visiting Machu Picchu is typically not included. This gives travelers the flexibility to choose from the many restaurants available in Aguas Calientes.
Personal Expenses
Trekkers should bring additional money for:
- Souvenirs
- Snacks and drinks
- Tips for guides and porters
- Personal purchases
Clothing and Footwear
Trekking clothing, hiking boots, and personal outdoor gear are not included.
We recommend reviewing the packing list before your departure to ensure you have everything required for the trek.

Personal Daypack
Hikers are expected to bring their own daypack for carrying water, personal items, cameras, and any essentials needed during the day.
Optional Extras
Several optional services can be added to your Inca Trail experience.
Huayna Picchu Mountain
Huayna Picchu is the iconic mountain that rises behind Machu Picchu in many photographs.
Due to limited availability, permits must be reserved well in advance and are available for an additional fee.

Vistadome Train Upgrade
All packages include an Expedition train ticket. Travelers who prefer larger panoramic windows and enhanced onboard service may upgrade to the Vistadome train for an additional cost.
Hotel Upgrades
If you would like to upgrade your accommodation before or after the trek, additional hotel options may be available upon request.
Why Review the Inca Trail Inclusions Before Booking?
Understanding exactly what is included in your Inca Trail package helps you compare operators, prepare your packing list, and budget accurately for your trip.
Although inclusions vary slightly between tour operators and trek lengths, knowing what services are provided ensures you can focus on enjoying one of the world’s most famous hiking experiences all the way to Machu Picchu.
