Recommended Packing List: The Grand Peruvian Circuit (9 Days)
This expedition spans Peru’s most diverse geographical contrasts—from the humid Pacific coast in Lima to the extreme altitudes of Vinicunca (5,000m) and the depths of Colca Canyon. You will experience rapid microclimate shifts, transitioning from scorching midday sun to sub-zero Andean dawns. Success on this route relies on a strategic “layering system” and lightweight technical gear, essential for managing both the physical demands of the high summits and strict railway luggage weight limits.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?
Mandatory Documentation
- Original Passport: Mandatory for entering Machu Picchu, boarding trains, and hotel check-ins. Photocopies are not accepted.
- Travel Insurance: Must include coverage for high-altitude activities (above 4,000 m.a.s.l.).
- Cash in Soles (PEN): Essential for public restrooms on the road and local markets where cards are not accepted.
Technical Clothing (Layering System)
- Extreme Cold Layer: Down or thermal jacket, gloves, and a wool hat (vital for the early morning in Vinicunca and Colca).
- Waterproof Layer: Rain jacket or poncho (the weather in Machu Picchu is highly unpredictable).
- Breathable Clothing: Quick-dry t-shirts (avoid cotton during hikes).
- Trekking Boots: With good grip and already “broken in” to avoid blisters.
Health and Protection
- Altitude Medication: “Sorojchi” pills or similar (consult with your doctor).
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen (SPF 50+), UV-filter sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Insect Repellent: Specifically for Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes.
- Reusable Water Bottle: For constant hydration (key to preventing altitude sickness).
Logistics and Technology
Power Bank: Extreme cold at Vinicunca drains phone batteries rapidly.
Train Luggage Restriction: Only one carry-on bag is allowed (max. 5-8 kg / 11-17 lbs). Main luggage must be stored at your hotel in Cusco.

Student Rates
OBTAINING A STUDENT DISCOUNT FOR YOUR MACHU PICCHU TRIP
Peru’s government provides reduced Machu Picchu entry fees for students, and we pass these savings directly into our tour prices. To qualify for this discount, the following requirements must be met:
- Age Limit: You must be younger than 25 at the time of your visit. This policy applies strictly to undergraduate degree students.
- Card Material and Format: Your university ID must be a physical plastic card (similar to a credit card) with all details officially printed. Paper cards, handwritten info, or stickers added to the card are strictly prohibited.
- Required Details: The ID needs to prominently display the university name, your personal information, a clear photo, and an expiration date valid for the year of travel. For example, if traveling in 2026, the card must be currently active and not expire before the end of the year.
- ISIC Limitations: Although the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is widely used worldwide, the Peruvian authorities do not accept it for Machu Picchu discounts. Only your official university-issued ID is valid.
Because the Peruvian government strictly enforces these discount rules, you are required to present your qualifying student ID at the Machu Picchu checkpoints. Failure to meet these exact standards may result in having to pay the full adult ticket price or potentially being denied entry if tickets are sold out. Therefore, please verify your student card meets all criteria before finalizing your reservation.
