Why Choose Manu Jungle Expedition 7D/6N?

The 7-Day Manu is your golden ticket to the last untouched corner of the planet. While others stay on the fringes, you will cross the frontier into the Reserved Zone, an exclusive, limited-access sanctuary where humans are mere spectators and nature reigns supreme. This is the only expedition that guarantees the time needed to track the jaguar, stand mesmerized by the explosion of color at the Great Macaw Clay Lick, and paddle in silence alongside legendary giant river otters.

It’s not just a trip; it’s a conquest of the senses: from the Andean peaks to the beating heart of Eden. If you are seeking the adventure of a lifetime, the answer is Manu in 7 days—because the Amazon’s greatest treasures aren’t found on the short path but deep within the forest.

Day 01: Cusco to Paucartambo: Gateway to the Manu Reserved Zone & Cloud Forest

Your adventure begins in the historic city of Cusco, the center of Andean culture. Departing early in the morning, we enjoy a scenic drive toward Paucartambo, ascending through the Andean highlands and gradually transitioning from the rugged mountains to the lush cloud forest that marks the entrance to this protected natural region. This is your first glimpse of one of the most biologically rich areas on Earth.

Along the way, we stop at the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient Aymara funerary towers built for nobility. These remarkable structures offer insight into local history and the civilizations that once thrived here. The landscape transforms dramatically throughout the journey, with mist-covered peaks giving way to dense, green forests filled with life.

As we descend toward the lowland forest, animal activity becomes increasingly visible. Keep watch for Peru’s emblematic bird, the cock of the rock, easily recognized by its bright orange plumage. You may also encounter the Amazonian umbrellabird, colorful trogons, or even the rare spectacled bear, one of the most elusive inhabitants of the region.

By mid-afternoon, we reach the small town of Pilcopata, where we check into our lodge. Travelers can relax, enjoy traditional cuisine, and prepare for the exciting days ahead. Showers and restroom facilities are available for comfort. This day provides a smooth introduction to the diverse landscapes of the Amazon basin

Day 02: Pilcopata to Blanquillo: Journey Through Manu Jungle & Boca Manu Wildlife

After breakfast in Pilcopata, we take a short bus ride to the Madre de Dios River, where our river adventure begins. Boarding the boat, we travel deeper into the lowland forest, entering an environment defined by dense vegetation, winding waterways, and remarkable ecological richness. This transition marks a dramatic shift in scenery, as roads give way to river corridors that serve as the primary routes through this remote region.

As we navigate downstream, the riverbanks reveal constant activity. Wading birds, including herons and egrets, are commonly seen scanning the shallows, while kingfishers dart rapidly above the water’s surface. Overhead, larger soaring birds may appear, including the impressive king vulture, whose wingspan makes it one of the most striking sights of the day. Throughout the journey, your guide will interpret the surrounding ecosystem, explaining how the river sustains the extraordinary variety of plant and animal life found here.

By mid-afternoon, we reach the village of Boca Manu, a small but important settlement that serves as a gateway to the deeper forest regions. Here we pause briefly to rest and enjoy light refreshments before continuing the journey by boat. The scenery remains constantly engaging, with new sights emerging along every bend of the river.

Later, we arrive near the Blanquillo clay lick, one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the area. This location is known for attracting vibrant flocks of macaws that gather to feed on mineral-rich clay deposits. The gathering of these brightly colored birds creates an extraordinary visual display and offers exceptional opportunities for observation and photography.
We spend the evening at Tambo Blanquillo Lodge, a comfortable accommodation immersed in the forest. From this location, guests can continue to observe bird activity and experience the unique atmosphere of the tropical lowlands. Showers and toilets are available.

Day 03: Blanquillo to Boca Manu: Amazon Jungle Expedition & Manu Wildlife Observation

We continue our river journey today, traveling farther through the vast tropical landscape. The waterways act as natural corridors through the forest, providing continuous opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitat. Along the shores, it is common to see freshwater turtles resting on fallen logs, while capybaras may be spotted feeding near the water’s edge. With luck, travelers may even catch a glimpse of a jaguar moving silently along the forest margins.

The journey itself becomes an essential part of the experience. The surrounding vegetation grows increasingly dense, and the sense of remoteness intensifies as we venture deeper into this protected environment. Your guide will continue sharing insights about the region’s ecology, helping you understand the complex relationships that sustain life within this ecosystem.

Our destination is Otorongo Lake, a classic oxbow formation created by the natural shifting of river channels. This calm body of water is renowned for its rich concentration of aquatic and semi-aquatic life. From a strategically positioned observation tower, we quietly watch for giant river otters, one of the most charismatic inhabitants of these waterways. The lake may also reveal caimans, turtles, and a variety of bird species moving through the surrounding vegetation.

After ample time for observation, we proceed to Casa Machiguenga, our lodge for the evening. Surrounded by forest, this accommodation allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the sounds and atmosphere of the tropical environment. Rooms are protected by large mosquito nets, and basic facilities are available for comfort.

Day 04: Cocha Otorongo & Cocha Salvador: Rainforest Exploration & Giant Otters Viewing

The day begins early with breakfast before exploring the trails and surroundings near Otorongo Lake. A nearby observation tower, located just a short distance from the water, provides an elevated perspective over the lake and adjacent forest. From this vantage point, guests may observe giant river otters, reptiles, and numerous bird species active during the morning hours.

The stillness of the lake contrasts beautifully with the dynamic life it supports. Subtle ripples, distant calls, and movements along the shoreline reveal the constant activity of the ecosystem. Your guide will assist in identifying species and explaining the ecological importance of these aquatic formations within the broader forest landscape.

Later, we paddle to Cocha Salvador, another oxbow lake located a short distance away. The quiet movement across the water allows for close observation without disturbing the environment. Here again, opportunities arise to encounter otters, turtles, caimans, and a diversity of birdlife adapted to wetland habitats.
By afternoon, we return to the lodge for rest. This pause offers time to reflect, enjoy the scenery, and absorb the atmosphere of this remote natural setting.

We will get a very early breakfast, board our boat on the Alto Madre de Dios River, and travel against the current, observing the incredible landscape of the Amazon rainforest and the enormous diversity of bird species and mammals. This portion of the journey offers excellent opportunities for nature observation, as the riverbanks are often active with movement and sounds from the surrounding forest.

As we continue navigating, travelers can appreciate the richness of this remote ecosystem, where the dense vegetation, towering trees, and constant presence of wildlife create a truly immersive experience. Sightings may include various birds, monkeys, and other animals that inhabit this preserved region, making every moment on the river visually engaging and unpredictable.

We will have the option to stop at the natural hot springs, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the tropical forest. Surrounded by lush greenery, this stop provides a refreshing break in a unique natural setting before we resume our journey.
In the afternoon, we continue by boat until we arrive at Amazon Manu Lodge. Here, we will rest comfortably in our rooms and spend the night surrounded by the remarkable sounds of the rainforest, enjoying a tranquil evening in this extraordinary environment.

Day 06: Boca Manu to Paititi Lodge: Jungle Tours & Medicinal Plants in Manu National Park

After breakfast, we explore another section of the jungle of Manu, deep in the Manu Biosphere Reserve, where our expert guide will explain the significance of medicinal plants used by native communities along the Madre de Dios and Manu rivers. This zone tour highlights the intricate connections between flora, fauna, and humans in one of the stunning Manu ecosystems.

Along the trails and riverbanks, travelers have the chance to spot howler monkeys, exotic birds, and other fascinating species of wild endemic to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Your guide will also share knowledge about the Manu National Park, explaining why this area is considered one of the best of the Peruvian Amazon for conservation and biodiversity.

After a traditional jungle lunch, you can relax in hammocks, swim in the river, or simply enjoy the serenity of this remote location. In the evening, we gather around a campfire at Paititi Lodge, reflecting on the experiences of the past days and appreciating the immersive adventure of this tour to Manu. Day 07: Paititi Lodge to Cusco: Return Journey Through Manu Reserved Zone & Amazon Jungle

Today, unfortunately, we begin our return after an extraordinary experience exploring one of the most diverse natural regions on the planet. Early in the morning, we board our boat once again and navigate upriver, retracing our route through the vast tropical forest. This final river navigation provides another opportunity to appreciate the calm atmosphere of the Amazon basin, surrounded by the sounds, colors, and rhythms of nature.

As we travel along the river, remain attentive to the surrounding environment. The treetops and riverbanks continue to offer excellent chances for animal sightings. Groups of Red Howler Monkeys are frequently observed resting in the canopy or moving gracefully through the branches. Bird activity remains constant, and the forest often reveals subtle movements that were previously unnoticed — a reminder of the immense ecological richness of this protected region.

Even during the return, the landscape remains captivating. Towering trees, dense vegetation, and the ever-changing reflections on the water illustrate why this area is globally recognized for its exceptional biological diversity. The journey itself becomes a final moment of connection with the forest, allowing travelers to absorb the scale, serenity, and complexity of this environment.
Upon arrival at the Port of Atalaya, we disembark and meet our driver for the overland journey back to Cusco. As we gradually ascend from the lowland forest into the Andean highlands, the scenery transforms once more. Warm tropical air gives way to cooler mountain conditions, and dense greenery transitions into dramatic mountain views.

By evening, we arrive in Cusco, where our journey concludes. Travelers leave with lasting memories of remarkable landscapes, extraordinary ecosystems, and the unique experience of having explored one of Peru’s most extraordinary natural treasures.
