With a perfect mix of high-adrenaline activities (ziplining and kayaking) and expert-led nature treks, it offers a complete perspective of the Amazon from the forest floor to the canopy top. At Southern Peru Explorers, we are experts in making the remote wild feel comfortable and unforgettable.
Day 01: Arriving in Puerto Maldonado & Adventure in Tambopata Lodge
The adventure in the Amazon starts early in the morning when you leave by a private van from the hotel in Cusco to the airport to catch your flight to Puerto Maldonado, a place that is sometimes called the “Biodiversity Capital of the World”. After arriving at your destination, transfer to the tour office where we will fill out all necessary documents and meet our guides who will accompany us on our 4-night Amazon tour.
First thing of the day is the sightseeing of the city of Puerto Maldonado. The city was established back in 1912 by rubber barons and now has become quite touristy. Visit the market in the city to see various colors and smells of tropical fruits and herbs, local dishes, and get prepared to dive into the atmosphere of the Tambopata Reserve.
Further on, board a boat that will lead us to our lodge, thus starting a journey along the Tambopata River. The river is known for a great amount of various species and during the ride try to see caimans, river turtles, herons and other representatives of Amazon fauna.
After arriving at our lodge, have a yummy lunch and a little rest before going for a tour to the Monkey Island by kayak. The island is located right in the center of the River and there live multiple species of monkeys: from Maquisapas that love making noise and playing games, Achuñis which entertain their visitors with different games and Frailes to the tiny “leoncitos” (little lions).
After your return to the lodge via kayaks, relax with a welcome drink and get settled into your cozy bungalows. Listen to the sounds of the jungle as you enjoy the sunset on the river; that marks the beginning of your adventure in Tambopata. Have an exquisite dinner and stay overnight in our cozy accommodation.
- Time for boat trip to the lodge: 2 hours along the Tambopata River
- Monkey Island: Home to 6 species of monkeys
- Accommodations: Raised bungalows amid the tropical rainforest
- Animals watching: Caiman, turtles, herons, and different bird species

Day 02: Lake Sandoval Hike & Wildlife Observation in the Jungle
After an early breakfast, we will have a boat transfer to the Lake Sandoval area through swamps and different types of Aguajal forests. This ecosystem plays an important role in the survival of various kinds of Amazon wildlife: otters, caimans, and several types of monkeys.
Then, go hiking through the jungle for 3 kilometers to Lake Sandoval. Lake Sandoval and its surroundings provide an ideal place for wildlife observation in lakes, where you will have an opportunity to see such animals as giant river otters, crocodiles, and birds. If you are lucky enough, you will meet the jaguar (Andean lion), one of the highlights in the Peruvian Amazon jungle.
Having returned to the lodge for lunch, explore the canopy tower, which is built right on the trunk of a giant tree in the reserve. From the tower, you will have an incredible opportunity to enjoy panoramic views, the canopy of the forest, and its inhabitants.
In the afternoon, you will be able to relax at the lodge, swim, fish, zip line or paddle on the River, enjoying the life of the Amazon. In the evening, go night walking with your guide to discover the nocturnal life of this rainforest: various frogs, caimans, insects and others. You will stay overnight in the lodge again in the middle of Amazon.
- Distance of guided hiking: 3 kilometers to Lake Sandoval
- Height of the canopy tower: 30 meters
- Wildlife: Otters, caimans, monkeys, parrots, and macaws
- Lake Sandoval: 2 kilometers of the ecosystem of the fresh water full of life

Day 03: Cocha Perdida Expedition & River Canoeing
After breakfast, you embark on a 2-hour guided expedition to Cocha Perdida (Lost Lagoon), which is a secret lagoon in the middle of the reserve. The reserve is home to some of the most diverse animal species, and Cocha Perdida is an amazing place to get a taste of the forest life. While exploring this area, your guide will explain to you the local ecosystem, as well as use machetes to cut through thick vegetation of the rainforest.
You will follow the trail, which covers a 3 km hike through different areas of the forest such as riverside forests, flooded palms and secret lagoons, where there is plenty of activity of the animal world. You will enjoy observing different types of plants and insects living here in abundance, and get fascinated by the flora and fauna of the region, which is known for its biodiversity across the globe.
After having lunch, we will go to the Briolo and Gamitana Rivers for a slow-paced boat trip down the river. The rivers are the habitat of various animals like turtles and butterflies, and this canoeing trip will allow you to observe the nature from close up in a unique and comfortable manner.
With the conclusion of the afternoon trip, one can unwind on the decks of the forest cabins and relish in the sounds of the forest, while reflecting on the third day of their 4-day adventure in the Amazon jungle. After dinner, rest up in the comfortable rooms in preparation for the last day of guided adventure.

A boat ride on Madre de Dios River, using a motorized boat, will give us a chance to see once more the last part of one of the most biodiverse parts of the National Reserve of Tambopata. Alongside the riverbank and around the forest, there is another occasion for us to experience the sounds of the Amazonian forest and the calm atmosphere which it can offer.
While you are on the way, take time to remember the whole 4-day Amazon experience, where we got to see all the wonders of the Madre de Dios by means of river rides, canopy tour, hiking and jungle tours. In the river, you got to witness the life under calm water, different flowering plants growing along the riverbank, and animals that move about in the forest.
In Puerto Maldonado, a private van will be waiting for you to take you to the airport for your flight back to Cusco. From Cusco airport, you will have a private transfer that will drive you to your hotel. So ends your 4-night lodge and river trip in the Tambopata, an experience where you get to join guided tours, boat rides, hikes and much more in the Amazon.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?
Documentations & Basic Requirements
- Original Passport: Very important for checking in at the airport and entering the entrance gate of Tambopata Reserve.

- Flights & Itineraries: Digital and paper copy for your transportation from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado.
- Yellow Fever Vaccine: Recommended (usually required) for visiting lowland Amazon.
Specialized Clothes for Jungle

- Swimming Suit: For use in the pool or when swimming in the river/streams.
- Lightweight rain jacket or poncho: Tropical storms come without warning, even during the dry season.
- Additional socks: Bring more than you think – high quality moisture wicking socks will save you from blisters in the hot and humid climate.
- Sun Hat: To protect your face during boat rides along Madre de Dios River.
Footwear
- Hiking Shoes or Hiking Boots: For good traction on the 3 km hike to Lake Sandoval that can get muddy at times.
- Sandals or Flip-Flops: Necessary for chilling out at the lodge and inside the bungalows.
- Noting: Most lodges have rubber boots for exploring the jungle on foot, but check with your guide when you arrive.
Jungle Clothing & Accessories.
- Headlamp or Flashlight: For the nighttime treks to find caimans, frogs and other nocturnal creatures.
- Day Pack (20-25L): For carrying around the camera and some gear while on the boating trips and hikes.
- Dry Bags: Very useful for storing your phone, passport, camera because of high humidity.
- Water Bottle: Necessary because of high humidity on the 2-hour boating trip.
Health & Personal Care
- Insect Repellent (30-50% DEET): Your first priority. Wear frequently, especially on the hikes to Cocha Perdida.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The sun in the tropics is more intense than what you feel under the canopy.
- Personal First-Aid Kit: Pack antihistamines (bug bite), anti-itch cream, rehydration salts, and your personal medications.
- Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes: Critical for refreshment after your hikes and before meals in the jungle.
