Salkantay Trek Information
Find out what this trek is all about. Giving you an overview of the route, terrain, length and what’s involved in this section will help you decide if this trek is right for you.
About the Salkantay Hike
The Salkantay Trek is a high mountain pass trek that will challenge you more than our other experiences over a 5D/4N Route. It is the most popular trek, 2nd only to the Inca Trail as it allows you to not only end up at cloud forest to behold the amazing Machu Picchu but also travel through snowy mountains passes and descend into warm tropical rainforest. The route boasts the famed Salkantay Mountain / Nevada Salkantay, which is one of the highest mountains in the Peruvian Andes. Another basis for its appeal is to see this majestic snow capped peak. You have no need to purchase a permit to undertake this trek, unlike the Inca Trail
Sites on the Salkantay Route
The Salkantay Trek is rated by ‘The National Geographic’s adventure magazine’ as one of the best 25 hikes in the world. So if you are an avid hiker, explorer, nature lover or photographer and want to push yourselves with extremes, this is the trek for you. Unlike other treks you will see a wider variety of Flora and Fauna due to the drastic change in landscape. We would classify the Inca Trail trek as a historical and cultural tour with elements of hard trekking, however, our Salkantay route is predominantly focused on nature, the environment and on the challenging hike through diverse landscapes, with bonuses of cultural and historical sites.
Considerations
Salkantay can be an arduous trek which is why may choose to go through a tour operator and be accompanied by experienced guides. However, due to the fact there is no permit required you are able to undertake this route alone. You will still need to pre-purchase Machu Picchu if you which to visit this at the end of your trek. We strongly advise if you are wanting to pursue this adventure without a guide or through a company then; go in minimum party of 2, have knowledge of navigation, have a high level of fitness and purchase the correct equipment (including a map) and food.
When is the best season to do Salkantay Trek?
The wet season between November-April will guarantee you rain, you may be in luck with showers between November and December. However, January to March you are going to encounter some fairly big downpours. This is the warmer season so if you are not put off by rain you get the benefits of warmer days and nights. The dry season between May and October graces you with wonderful sunshine in the days and clearer skies which means you be able to see the views without cloud and fog. Although, at night the temperature can drop close to freezing or below.
