The Peruvian Ministry of Culture is exclusively in charge of the permits and availability. Restricted numbers are in place to minimise overcrowding on the trail and to preserve it as best as possible whilst still allowing people to experience its magic. If you do not have a permit you will be stopped at one of the checkpoints and will not be allowed to continue.

Trips can vary depending on what you are wanting to explore. Some are a one day trip from Cusco, others discover all of the sacred valley whilst making their way to machu Picchu. Here at Southern Peru explorers we also provide an option to visit the Sacred Valley along with the Inca Trail trek.

Do I need a tourist ticket if I am just staying in these places?

No If you are just staying there, however it seems a shame to visit these places and skip the history and attractions.

The type 3 ticket lasts 10 days so you have enough time to get round them.
