You need a permit for any company you go with, on any trek you attend for any length of time if you are stepping onto the trail. There are checkpoints to make sure people have the correct permit for the correct date.

Why do I need a permit?

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture is exclusively in charge of the permits and availability. Restricted numbers are in place to minimise overcrowding on the trail and to preserve it as best as possible whilst still allowing people to experience its magic. If you do not have a permit you will be stopped at one of the checkpoints and will not be allowed to continue.

If I am going on a multi-day hike, do I need more than one permit?

No, you only need one permit per person no matter how long you are on the trail. You need to book It for the first day you will be stepping onto the Classic Inca trail. Note: this may not be the start of you trip if you are visiting Lima, the amazon, sacred valley etc first. Please check with your tour company exactly when to book it.

When is the best season to do Inca Trail?

The wet season between November-April will guarantee you rain, you may be in luck with showers between November and December. However, January to March you are going to encounter some fairly big downpours. This is the warmer season so if you are not put off by rain you get the benefits of warmer days and nights.
