24th June, The Cusco's Festival

Inti Raymi is a spectacular event to behold. It is a festival held in June for 9 days to mark the winter solstice in which an ancient ritual is performed.

This celebration is to theIncas most valued Deities; Inti the sun god. It’s origins preside with The 9th Inca, Pachacutec, as it is believed this ancient king inforced it in the 15th century. Eradicated by the Spanish after their conquest in 1535, modern day Cusquenos in 1944 reignited the festival and have honored the cultural tradition every year since. The days are filled with dancing, music, food

However, the pinnacle of the festival is the reenactment of this revered ritual. It engulfs the entirety of the city with hundreds of actors and stands in 3 different auspicious locations. The first being Coricancha, the Temple of the sun. Where offerings such as food and animals are presented. The second event is in the Plaza De Armas where there are such huge numbers of crowds and actors performing traditional dances and rituals that the plaza is cordoned off.

The main event is held just outside the city center at the ruins of Saksaywaman. This is the main event with the most actors. To watch this cultural piece of history there is a fee and you will need to prebook tickets online.
