Cusco History

Lima may be the stated Capital of Peru but if you are wanting a real taste of peruvian history and culture Cusco is the place people come, over 2 million a year in fact. It is host to a multitude of ancient ruins, temples, pathways and churches. Not least of all Peru is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World : Machu Picchu. Just a train ride away this magnificent site which draws in tens of thousands of visitors a year shows the best of Peru. Its construction was ordered in the 15th century by the Inca who ruled over Cusco at the time. Cusco within this civilisation was the Capital and main point of expansion. However, historians and scientists have claimed that Cusco in fact spans back over 3,000 years as the longest inhabited city in The Americas.

When Spanish people arrived to Cusco?

In 1532 the Spanish invaded and slowly overthrew the Incas for colonisation. Cusco was hugely affected by this change of power. Many things exist today within the modern city of Cusco such as language, architecture, religious beliefs and traditions due to the influence of the Spanish. As with many places a fusion of cultures is evident, although within Cusco the stark contrast within the differences are not only easily seen but highlighted and taught. Cusco’s history is one of the many joys of visiting as within a very small area you are able to visit a plethora of historical and archaeological sites that are unchanged due to Cusco’s status as a World Heritage Site.
