The hike to the Red Valley lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours, where also it is possible to be observed; picturesque mountains and beautiful valleys, llamas, alpacas, and almost always several vicuñas; you can also get magnificent views of the glaciers that make up the Ausangate, one of the highest mountains in Peru.
Currently, the Red Valley is everyone’s favorite destination when visiting Vinicunca Mountain. Its bright colors will leave you astonished, and it’s worth mentioning that you probably won’t see anything like it again!
Turquoise, scarlet, and mustard-colored sediments of sand and earth drape down Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunka, and give the Mountain its striking appearance.
These different layers of color represented other mineral contents. They were formed over millions of years before being exposed to the tectonic movements and intense wind erosions of the high Andes.
The Mountain was once covered by a glacier which has since melted due to the effects of global warming. It then became a popular side excursion on the Ausangate Trek before shorter 1- and 3-day tour routes were developed in recent years.
