DAY 01

Cusco – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata

Most of today will be spent in the car. Departing early from Cusco, we will ascend into the mountainous region of Paucartambo, slowly transitioning from high sierra to lush cloud forest. Along the way, we will visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient Aymara funeral towers once constructed for noble persons. As we descend from the mountains, we will begin to see more flora and fauna. Keep on the look-out for the Amazonian Umbrellabird,

DAY 02

Pilocopata – Atalaya – Lodge

We will eat a delicious breakfast and then take a minibus to the nearby small port of Atalaya. Along the way, we will stop and take a small hike to look for monkeys and birds. Upon arriving in Atalaya, we will board a motorized boat that will take us 8 hours down the Alto Madre de Dios River to reach the lowland rainforest. Get ready to see herons, egrets, kingfishers, and the notorious king vulture with a wingspan of 1.2- 2m/ 4- 7ft. By mid-afternoon,

DAY 03

 Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick – Camungo Lake And Tower – Maquisapayo

We will depart early from our lodging to go 40 minutes downriver to the macaw clay lick in Blanquillo. From an observation platform, we will watch macaws, parrots, and parakeets as they flock to eat clay, necessary to their diet. We will eat breakfast on the observation platform, and then explore some nearby trails to see more monkeys and birds. In the afternoon, we will visit the nearby Camungo oxbow

DAY 04

 Llulluchapampa Phuyupatamar 

As the most challenging day, the trail climbs to the Dead Woman’s Pass. From the pass the trail will then descend towards the Pacaymayo River until it rises again for the accent of the second pass of the day, the ruins of Rukuraqay. DAY 05

Lucmabamba – Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we make a 2.5-hour ascent to El Mirador or Abra Q’elloqasa, a high lookout that provides an exceptional view of the renowned Machu Picchu. From El Mirador, we’ll continue upwards to the lost city of Llactapata at 2850m/ 9350ft, just recently re-discovered by archaeologists in 2003. This archeological complex offers impressive views of both Machu Picchu and Salkantay Mountain. There, we will share our final lunch together before making our final two-hour descent for the Aobamba
