Puerto Maldonado- Monkey Island
We will pick you up early from your Cusco accommodations and chauffeur you to the nearby Alejandro Velasco Astete airport for your domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado, the biodiversity capital of the world. Keep your eye on the horizon as we transition from high sierra to lush, lowland rainforest. Upon arrival, you will receive a city tour of Puerto Maldonado and learn how this small town, founded by rubber barons in 1912, has received worldwide fame.

After breakfast, we will boat to the area of the river near Lake Sandoval. Upon disembarking, we will hike 2 hours through the Aguajal forest and alongside swamps to arrive at Lake Sandoval. Here, we will see black caimans, river otters, many species of birds, and if we’re lucky, maybe even a jaguar! We will return to the lodge for lunch and then head to an Amazon Observatory, which sits on top of a ginormous, Shihuahuaco tree, from which you

After breakfast, we will hike 2 hours to Cocha Perdida, the Lost Lake, clearing our path with machetes as we walk. This lake is home to an abundant variety of species, which we will be able to observe from the bank of the water. Returning to the lodge, we will eat lunch and prepare for our next big outing, a 2-hour hike to the Briolo and Gamitana Rivers, where we will spend the afternoon fishing and observing the wildlife. Our last morning, we will journey back to Cusco by boat, private bus, and later by plane from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco, we’ll be greeted by a Southern Peru Explorers van to take you back to your Cusco accommodation.
